Three Courageous Words (Mission: Six)
He’d fallen in love with her when he witnessed her compassion toward other students, patients and anyone she came into contact with. She was everything the life he’d led in the gang was not. Angela was good and pure, and out to help the world, not tear it apart.
Buck’s chest tightened. He’d never stopped loving her, even when he was half a world away. But she’d been better off without him weighing her down. He’d had to believe that in order to leave the way he had. And the proof of her success and continued compassion only made him love her more.
Angela had been sitting in silence staring through the binoculars at the tiny village, but not seeing a single hut through the lens. Her memories overlaid her vision with images of medical school, studying long hours with Buck, and falling asleep in his arms on the couch in her apartment.
She’d given her heart to this man, without holding anything back. And he’d left. No note. No explanation. Just left. How her heart had broken. She’d feared he’d been kidnapped or murdered when he hadn’t shown up for class. Her calls went unanswered and his phone was finally disconnected. If she hadn’t cornered his roommate and demanded to know what had happened to him, she wouldn’t have known he’d dropped out of school and joined the Navy.
Angela never understood. Why had he left her without a word? Why had he joined the Navy? And he hadn’t been around to give her any answers. Her eyes stung with the hint of the tears she’d shed for days. She’d had a hard time concentrating on her studies. The medical licensing exam had passed in a blur. How she’d passed, she hadn’t a clue.
“I always knew you’d be a great doctor.” Buck’s whispered words jolted her back to the present.
“Quitting wasn’t an option,” she shot back, automatically. After the pall of sadness lifted, she’d gone through an angry stage, much like the stages of grief. She wrapped herself in her anger, using it to push through her internship. No, she didn’t take her anger out on her patients. But she didn’t date, preferring to remain focused on her goal. To become a licensed physician and get the hell away from the place that reminded her of her first love.
