My Review of Ruin by Rachel Van Dyken
You can let your fears control you, or you can control your fears. never for one second believe the lie that you don’t have a choice.
I was already a huge Rachel Van Dyken fan after reading The Bet and The Wager. Those were funny, cute romances. This is another contemporary romance, but it has a gut-wrenching twist that keeps you on the edge until the very end.
Ruin is a coming of age, college romance about dealing with the hand life deals us and learning to make the best of it (and then some). I was drawn in to the story from the very beginning because of Wes. Rich, sexy, mysterious Wes isn’t what you initially think him to be. He is sweet, caring, lovable, and broken. In walks Kiersten, well actually she collides with Wes right before she counts his 8 pack. 😉
Wes is holding on to an enormous secret, but still tries to break Kiersten out of her broken shell. She’s dealt with a lot of heartbreak over the last two years and she’s only 18. Wes, being the Senior to her Freshman, says he only wants to be friends but we watch their love grow and unfold until we reach the climax.
I hate crying. Ugly crying. Big, ugly, fat tears. Yep. This book had them, but there was also more throughout the story. Yes, there was heartache, yes there were laughs, but there was a budding romance and a forever love building.
Maybe it’s not in the perfection of life that things make sense, but in the chaos.
Rachel Van Dyken brought these wonderful characters to life and they will hold a place in my heart because they were so beautifully written. Even the secondary characters of Lisa and Gabe were hard not to fall for. I’m looking forward to getting Gabe’s story in Toxic. Our sweet couple does get their happily ever after and what a great ending to the story.
