My Review of Teach Me by Sloan Johnson
Sloan Johnson is a natural storyteller and I’ve been reading her books since the very beginning. I’ve read her M/M love scenes before (see Unexpected Consequences review), but they were always intermingled with M/F, M/F/M. Teach Me is the first that is completely M/M from the beginning and I found myself absorbed in the story line itself. The sexual scenes were both beautiful and loving.
Part YA/NA, Teach Me starts after Austin’s parents have shunned him after his “I’m gay” announcement. The story follows Austin and David as they find each other, save each other, and teach one another about becoming whole without sacrificing who you are at the core. Why should someone have to give up their life because of how other people feel? Honestly, why does it matter who someone loves? Sloan covers these topics and how other people influence actions based on what they perceive to be the right thing.
There were moments I found myself wanting to slap Austin upside the head, but then I remembered his age and found myself understanding his thought process. David is 15 years older than Austin. Sometimes that fact is obvious and other times it is just something in the back of your mind. David is successful, driven, and absolutely swoon-worthy. Both characters brought something unique to the table, each other. I enjoyed the building attraction and the slow progression of their love. It actually made it feel like I was there watching the story unfold.
The relationship isn’t initially built on trust because Austin still holds back, but ultimately shares his issues with David. Can David make Austin see his potential and nurture him in this relationship? Is Austin able to let his walls crumble to finally find unconditional love? Both David and Austin grow throughout the story and we see that growth reflected in the actions of secondary characters, Bree and Chad.
Sloan Johnson has written a beautiful love story that has its roots in truth and not fantasy. Quick, easy read with realistic situations and includes family ties, friendships, and love.
